Mission

YEU was established in 2001 and since then has responded to emergencies including the Dayak and Madura tribal conflicts; the influx of migrant workers in Nunukan and East Kalimantan; several floods in Central, East Java and Jakarta; the sectarian conflict in Poso; the religious-ethnic conflicts in Moluccas Islands; the Bali bombing; the Aceh tsunami and Nias earthquake (2004/2005); Yogyakarta earthquake (2006); West Java tsunami and earthquake (2007); and the latest West Sumatra earthquake (2009) and Mentawai tsunami (2010). YEU is also active in Myanmar responding Nargis cyclone in 2008 till now and is aligned with other faith based humanitarian organizations in Indonesia under Humanitarian Forum Indonesia which enabled YEU supported the joint humanitarian action in Gaza in 2009.

YEU is one of the working units under YAKKUM which has 11 hospitals, 11 community development units, 31 health clinics, 1 rehabilitation unit, 1 pharmacy and 1 emergency response unit. These are part of a network which includes the churches and where YEU can train and mobilise people for possible emergency responses.

YAKKUM/YEU is member of HAP since December 2009 and is preparing two-year accountability work-plan until end of 2011. There are three strategic issues in the work-plan for 2009-2011 period, i.e. capacity building in DRR mainstreaming at school, communities organization and health institutions; improving the quality of programs; and strengthening organizational development. During its three-year in HAP implementation, YEU also appointed as national coordinating organization in Indonesia for the View from Front-liners project which monitors and reports the progress of HFA (Hyogo for Framework Action) framework implementation in the country.

Three of these main areas of work are:
1. Responding to environmental disasters with relief-recovery plans along with a long-term development strategy;
2. Responding to victims of conflict along with peace building across communities;
3. Protecting the rights and dignity of the victims.
