GNDR at Sasakawa Award for DRR 2025

The 2025 United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction has been awarded to the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) in the organisational category.

The award, supported by the Nippon Foundation, was conferred on 5th June at a ceremony at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 in Geneva. It recognises individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to reducing disaster risk while advocating for resilience and inclusivity. The theme of this year’s award was ‘Connecting science to people: democratizing access to innovation and technology for disaster resilient communities,’ underscoring the importance of innovation and accessibility in modern disaster risk reduction.

With over 1,900 members across 131 countries, GNDR is one of the largest international networks of organisations committed to reducing disaster risk. The network aims to strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations to respond to disasters and build resilience within their communities.

GNDR’s substantial contributions to the content and implementation of the Sendai Framework, in addition to its advocacy work for the role of civil society organisations in inclusive, all-of-society disaster risk reduction, are recognised through receipt of the award.

GNDR Executive Director Marcos Concepcion Raba dedicated the award to the network’s members:

“This award is for our members — the community leaders, grassroots organisations, and local advocates who work every day to build resilience in the face of crisis. Their voices, knowledge and action are what drive this network. We are enormously grateful to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and The Nippon Foundation for their support and partnership.”

This recognition reaffirms the importance of locally-led, inclusive, and community action to build safer and more resilient societies.

GNDR has published so far three voluntary commitments in the SFVC platform and has been actively encouraging their members to publish and showcase their DRR work as voluntary commitment at the SFVC platform.

  1. Access to DRR information and tools strengthens community cohesion in El Salvador
  2. Localisation initiative for supporting disaster displaced people in South Sudan
  3. Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR)
